I’d like to carve a 6 feet wooden sign what kind of wood is best for New York weather?

Cedar, redwood or cypress. When it comes to “weathering” these three woods are much more durable than pine, oak or other woods.

Balsa wood, so when cars crash into it the damage is minimal. Also if a kid wants to build a model rocket, he can just take parts of the sign for the fins. It’s a Win-Win situation.

I would say if you can afford the higher cost use Azek or Koma as they are poly or PVC type boards that are made to be outside with no maintenance for many years. The Azek and Koma can but cut or carved with power tools just like wood. Then you will just need some paint to add color to the carving. Any wood will require maintenance

Are you staining or painting? For staining, I’d use cedar, or redwood. Redwood, on average, costs about 30-40% more than cedar. You can also use pressure-treated, but you should allow several months for the wood to dry out before you apply any finish to it. If you’re painting, you can use most woods. You do, however, have to use a good primer (I recommend oil-based) and will need to repaint every 2-3 years for best results. Good luck.
